The Akita， named for a province in northern Japan， where it is believed to have originated， is a tractable， intelligent， courageous and fearless. The breed’s existence goes back to the 1600s， when the Akita guarded Japanese royalty and was used for hunting fowl and large game (including bears). If you are considering an Akita as your next pet here are five things you should know.

1. The Akita is happiest when living inside with his family. Like most powerful and willful breeds， early training and socialization is mandatory. Because the Akita is highly intelligent， daily and varied excersise routines are recommended， to avoid behavioral problems stemming from boredom and/or frustration.

2. The Akita is generally a healthy breed. However， the breed can be prone to hip dysplasia， bloat， hypothyroidism， progressive retinal atrophy and sebaceous adenines. While there is no foolproof means to avoid any or all of these conditions， best practice is to be sure your dog eats a high quality diet， drinks clean fresh water， and gets plenty of excersise.

3. The Akita is covered with a stiff， short haired coat that needs considerable grooming. The coat is naturally waterproof， so bathe your Akita only when necessary as bathing will remove the coats waterproof. The Akita should shed heavily twice a year.

4. The Akita has a dominant personality and tends to be aggressive with other dogs， the breed is especially aggressive to dogs of the same sex. The Akita is best suited as a single dog household. Be aware the Akita's strong personality can be overwhelming. He is not the dog for a first-time owner， and he is not for the timid.

5. The Akita is bold and can be headstrong， the breed is naturally ware of strangers but connects deeply to his family. These traits in combination with the Akita’s fearlessness makes this breed an exceptional guard dog.
